Liberteer, the one-man project of Cretin's Matthew Widener, has managed to release an album that turns all this conventional wisdom on its head while still potentially appealing to the most hardened of grindcore traditionalist.

Still my favorite Panopticon album. This Monday edition includes links to articles, columns, podcasts and more. Rise Like Lions After Slumber Terrific blend of searing grind and anarchist polemics. In addition to the folk instrumentation, Widener mixes things up with huge melodic guitar leads that wouldn't feel out of place on a power metal album. How awesome is that?

Would he prefer that you buy your groceries locally instead of at Walmart? My only possible gripe with this record is that each song leads directly into the next, essentially creating one minute-long track. Nineteen tracks explode like IED's and spread with the subtlety of sonic napalm.

Sweat For Blood Clearly, this dude is looking at the bigger picture. Killer Spanish grind in the old school vein full of pissed off riffs. Even more incendiary lyrically than musically, LIBERTEER is the soundtrack to a populace casting off the oon of state, church, and economic oppression, and fighting tooth and nail to recapture personal freedom.

Err, there are some rousing marching band-style interludes that feature everything from bugle to banjo, and it's unclear whether Widener is in fact responsible for every last one of those as well — they don't sound sampled or keyboard triggered — but who really cares, right?

You're allowed to sing about gore or societal breakdown, you shouldn't do anything too flashy musically, and your songs should be about a minute long. Quite the contrary, Better to Die On Your Feet is traditional grindcore through and through, albeit of varying tempo and often incorporating old school death metal influences the filthy, overdriven guitar tone of Entombed is an obvious production influence.

This is dangerous territory for any practitioner of grindcore - even Pig Destroyer got put through the proverbial ringer for putting thrash parts on Terrifyer and Phantom Limb - but Better to Die keeps the intensity level so high that it's hard to imagine well-reasoned dissent.
